A Cougar And Its Prey

She kept running, panting for breath and peeking behind once in a while to see her predator gaining on her, his eyes flickering with tormenting mischief. The stairs were looming in front of her; if she could just get to the safety of her room, she'd be home free; if only... she began climbing up the stairs like a girl posessed, ignoring the burning sensation in the soles of her feet. Her predator followed suit effortlessly. She reached for the door handle; her sweaty palms slipped right off it. It was too late; she could feel her predator's evil presence closing in on her. With a sense of impending doom, she turned around to face him. He was walking slowly towards her, his mouth curving into a malicious grin. He reminded her of the pouncing cougars she'd seen in Discovery Channel, and she knew very well she was cornered. She tried to take further steps back, but the wooden door that was supposed to protect her had turned against her. Now it stood firmly, guarding her empty room. So close, so close, she sobbed inwardly... Instinctively, she slid her hand behind her back and searched for the damned handle again. She gave it a gentle push, as quietly as possible; this time it did not fail her. Elated, she opened the door in an excruciatingly slow motion; she knew better than to agitate the cougar with fast, sudden movements. She backed into her room, taking one small step at a time, and then... "AaHHh!!" The cougar yelled at the top of his lungs, his eyes focused on something behind her, in the unlit room, his fingers seemingly pointing at something so despicably horrifying that words failed him. Shocked to the tips of her toes, she screamed. And screamed... Only to find her brother droppping onto the floor, clutching his stomach while trying to catch his breath -- he was laughing. She turned around to peek into her room and true enough, there was nothing but pitch darkness. Feeling a sudden wave of uncomfortable warmth coming over her, she realized he'd done it again. Her face burning with embarassment, she slid onto the floor with a great sigh; she was too exhausted to even grab the opportunity of getting back at her brother while he was helpless with mirth and laughter. The sight of her brother rolling on the floor laughing uncontrollably would haunt her for a long time, she knew; but at the moment, she was simply glad he was just fooling around.
